This is a collection of one-of-a-kind fiber art pieces that blend the two art forms closest to Mary’s heart: painting and rug-hooking. The flowers, leaves, and objects from nature that are the subjects of her paintings take on a new life in this traditional textile medium. Using the colors and textures of wool, the painted designs are transformed into pieces of fiber art that can be hung, mounted in a shadow box, or framed with or without glass.
How they are made~
“My many photos taken on walks and hikes through nature trails, botanical gardens, neighbor’s yards, and plant nurseries serve as inspiration for my wool art pieces. From there, my intuition takes over to freely transform the piece in whatever way feels right. I sketch a basic outline of the image on monk’s cloth backing fabric, then hook the design free-form, intuitively pulling from my various hues of hand-dyed wool. Often, the hand-hooked wool paintings are done as recreations of my watercolor images; sometimes it’s the opposite, with the wool painting made first, and a watercolor recreating it.”
